The preferred service choice for most UPSC civil service applicants is the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) rather than the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), although both have the same prestige.
To become an IFS employee in India, a candidate must pass the Diplomatic Service Exam, which is administered annually by the Union Civil Service Commission.
