To be considered educated, speakers said,

- and the ability to learn throughout life.

This is the first and necessary step in updating the general education curriculum, which deliberately fosters the basic qualities of an educated person. From personal experience, I know many university professors who are committed to the ideal.
The liberal arts person understands that they belong to a community whose prosperity and well-being is critical to their own well-being, and helps that community flourish by giving themselves to others to do well.
From this commitment to tolerance flow all those aspects of liberal arts education that
- celebrate the value of learning foreign languages,
- getting to know the cultures of distant peoples,
- studying the history of distant times,
- getting to know the many ways in which men and
- women knew the sacred and gave names to their gods.
Universities, by definition, transform us into educated citizens - men and women, with greater access to the accumulated knowledge in various disciplines (biology, history and engineering, etc.) than the average person who has not attended a similar university campus.
The diversity of educational institutions indicates that education can involve a range of different sets of knowledge, beliefs, personality traits and skills.
It is clear that these are characteristics that can be learned in formal education, but they must be developed in the process.
Hence, a person can be considered polite if they develop their knowledge and skills in a way that ultimately leads to their positive contribution to the life of the community.
